A new book unearths secret, East German police files to reveal how Communist leaders misjudged their bid to assuage East Germany’s youth in 1988 by allowing them to host a Springsteen show and instead inciting their passion for freedom further. Of that show, Bruce has said, “Once in a while you play a place, you play a show that ends up staying inside of you, living with you for the rest of your life. East Berlin in 1988 was certainly one of them.”
